Instruction from Matthew Burbidge (GB/D)
FACE THE SEA INTO THE WIND AND SING OR SAY THESE FOLLOWING WORDS (X3): LAND OWN MY, GIBRALTAR, FREE FOREVER BE YOU MAY, STAND I WHICH ON ROCK THE, GIBRALTAR, GIBRALTAR.
This is Matthew Burbidge's instruction he sent by postcard. Matthew is an artist from England, living and working in Berlin. I find his instruction, to perform an alternative (reversed) version of Gibraltar's National Anthem, thrilling, problematic, beautiful, political, careful, fragile, and very much DADA. It was carried out today by me on the most Southern spot of Gibraltar, maybe of Europe, the Europa Point. I did not sing, but shouted out very loud – the wind was so heavy that on the video nothing is to hear except the windy noises the camera caught. But it happened – and for this reason I subtitled it. The tourists spotting my action were kind of bewildered – and I liked it.
