Instruction from Bignia Wehrli (CH/D)
I arrived in Gibraltar yesterday afternoon. And I received the postcards that were sent to me to the c/o address of Gibraltar artist Alan Perez. And I have to adjust... not only to Gibraltar, but also to what I received by mail. Amongst the instructions are some that I do not know if I can execute or „fulfill“ them. This will be an interesting time full of work.
One instruction that will accompany me throughout the 3 weeks of my stay is surely the beautiful one by Bignia Wehrli from Switzerland, a great artist, living in Berlin. So I will start – and continue – with this one. Bignia took a photo of the sky in Sternenberg, Switzerland, on the 14th of August. She printed it out on postcard format and cut a hole in the printed sky. Sent it and wrote to me:
„Search this BLUE, wherever you are. In the sky, on humans or on things... Take a photo of the found BLUE, by placing the postcard in front of it, catching it in its hole. Make a list of the things you found, the places, the time.“
From now on I will post from time to time some of my try-outs to find a matching blue – but it is difficult. Even though I thought the sky looked almost the same, or the things I saw: It will never be the same tone of blue as on the postcard, thanks to the photo lenses reacting to light on the camera or the i-phone. This is why I decided to call this series of photos „ALMOST“ – or to say it with Miles Davis: Kind(s) Of Blue. So this will be a research on a colour in a place: Gibraltar!
Thank you, Bignia! For making me focus on (almost) everything, that is blue in Gibraltar... The list of the photo's time, date and place will be shown at the the exhibition.
